The Metabolism of 2-carbon Compounds Related to Glycine

چکیده

In a continuation of the search for intermediates involved in the condensation of the a-carbon atoms of 2 glycine molecules (l), investigations were carried out with ethanolamine-l-C13,2-C14 (C13H20H-C14H2NH2). It was considered possible that the serine synthesized from administered glycine2-Cl4 is, at first, labeled only in the a-carbon atom, the P-carbon atom being derived from unlabeled, endogenous sources of “formate.” If the ethanolamine formed from this serine (2) were capable of yielding a labeled lcarbon fragment, cr,/3-labeled serine would be produced. The results described below failed to support such a reaction scheme. It was shown, however, that a major reaction in the metabolism of ethanolamine is deamination, oxidation, and reamination to glycine.

The Succinate - Glycine Cycle

This aminoketonic acid is the source of all the carbon atoms of protoporphyrin (2-4). In this series of reactions, t.he a-carbon atom of glycine becomes the b-carbon atom of S-aminolevulinic acid. Since the a-carbon atom of glycine, detached from its carboxyl group, is not only utilized for porphyrin synthesis but also conforms to the metabolic pattern of the “Cl” compounds (3), this carbon acy...

Serine metabolism in rat liver slices.

While much is known of the various pathways of serine metabolism, there is little quantitative information concerning the relative importance of each. The present study has, therefore, been undertaken to examine the over-all pattern of serine metabolism in surviving rat liver slices. It seems likely that serine is in the major pathway for both the synthesis of glycine and “l-carbon” compounds f...
